Afghanistan has most cases of cholera in 2022

In a recent update, the World Health Organization reported that, in the past year, the recorded cases of cholera have more than doubled in the world, rising from 220,000 to 470,000.

The WHO figures show that Afghanistan has the highest number of patients between 1 January 2022 and 30 April 2023, followed by Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Pakistan.

The disease is caused by ingestion of food or water that’s contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera, with young children, especially those under the age of 5, bearing the brunt of the disease.
