A senior Iraqi Army commander was killed by the Islamic State (IS) late on Tuesday in Anbar province, west of Baghdad.
General Brigadier Ahmed al-Lami, commander of the 7th division of the 29th brigade of the Iraqi Army, and his accompanying soldiers, were ambushed by a group of IS jihadists.
IS soon claimed responsibility for the killing of the general brigadier, saying it had also killed one officer and injured another in the raid.
Spokesperson for the Iraqi commander-in-chief, Yahya Rasoul, also confirmed the report, calling Lami as a “brave commander”.
He revealed that the ambush had taken place at the Shahid Mohammed al-Karwi checkpoint in the city of Hit, 180km northwest of Baghdad.
“We will pursue the terrorists who carried out this treacherous and cowardly act, and the blood of our martyrs will not be in vain,” he added.
