More than 45 people have been killed in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to the UN peacekeeping mission in the country.
The attack, occurred on Sunday, targeted a camp where internally displaced persons (IDP) were sheltering, and is believed to have been conducted by militants affiliated to a group called the Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO).
The UN mission confirmed that the militants had brutally massacred helpless displaced people at the Lala displacement site in Djugu territory.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has the largest population of IDPs in African, with the UN estimating at least 5.6 million have fled their homes due to armed conflicts.
