UN stresses human rights must be on priority list of climate change action

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has issued an open letter, prior to Sharm El-Sheikh conference, calling for human rights to be placed at the center of efforts to tackle climate change. He warned that the right to life is under threat due to inaction in the face of the climate emergency.

He said the injustice caused by climate change was “catastrophic”, citing the case of Pakistan, where recent floods affected more than 30 million people. “It will take years to rebuild and even begin to understand the implications of this one disaster,”, Türk said.
