UNSC to pass resolution condemning Taliban’s oppressive measures against women

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is supposed to vote, today Thursday, on a draft resolution condemning the ban on Afghan women working for international organizations in Afghanistan, and to urge the Taliban authorities to “swiftly reverse” its repressive campaign against the rights of women and girls.

The draft resolution describes the ban on Afghan women as “unprecedented in the history of the United Nations” and stresses “the indispensable role of women in Afghan society.”

Diplomats expect the Security Council to vote in favor of the draft resolution, which states that banning Afghan women from working at the United Nations “undermines human rights and humanitarian principles.”

The Security Council vote will come days before an international meeting to be held in Doha on the first and second of May to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

Since the overthrow of the Western-backed government in 2021, the Taliban administration has tightened its restrictions on women’s participation in public life, including preventing women from attending university and closing secondary schools for girls.
