UN official appeals for $2.6 billion to aid millions affected by famine in Somalia

The UN’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, has made a plea for $2.6 billion to support millions of people who are still at risk of famine in the country due to climate shocks and prolonged conflict.

The historic drought is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world caused by five consecutive poor rainy seasons.

Nearly 8.25 million people, or almost half of the country’s population, require life-saving humanitarian and protection assistance.

Although donor support has helped, only 13% of the required funding has been secured so far.
