Dead livestock, raging hunger – distressing situation in Southern Ethiopia

Southern Ethiopia is experiencing its worst drought in decades following three years of failed rains, leaving the animals in the village of Kura Kalicha dying of starvation.

Local government officials fear the villagers will soon succumb to the drought, with over 100 residents in hospital in critical condition from malnutrition, including children, elders, and pregnant women.

Nearly 12 million people in Ethiopia are estimated to suffer from food insecurity in drought-affected areas, with the population relying overwhelmingly on their livestock and supplemented by basic crops like maize.
