Syrian refugee becomes mayor of a German village

Ryyan Alshebl, a 29-year-old Syrian refugee, was elected into mayoral office in a small town in southwest Germany on Sunday.

After fleeing his war-torn homeland in 2015, he settled in Ostelsheim, where he worked in the town hall for 7 years before being elected as mayor with 55.4 percent of the vote.

Alshebl has praised voters for having “set an example for broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism for the whole of Germany.”

It should be mentioned that Ryyan Alshebl is the first Syrian refugee to have applied for asylum in Germany between 2015 and 2016 known to have been elected to office.
