New study urges greenhouse emission cuts in Middle East, N Africa to reduce heat-related mortality

More than 80% of heat-related deaths predicted in the Middle East and North Africa could be averted if global warming is reduced to 2 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, according to new research published in The Lancet Planetary Health.

The study adds: About 1 to 3 people per 100,000 are expected to die of heat-related causes every year by 2100 if temperatures rise significantly.

Since population growth is identified as the main culprit, authors strongly advise authorities in MENA region to adopt better demographic policies and healthy ageing.
