Bahraini dissident released after more than 7 years of arrest

The Bahraini security authorities released the prominent opposition leader Khalil al-Halwaji, after more than 7 years of his arrest, as part of the Alternative Penal Code.
Al-Halwaji was arrested on September 3, 2014 and sentenced to 10 years in prison, and both the Court of Appeal and the Court of Cassation upheld the ruling.
In July 2019, the Bahraini authorities refused to release Al-Halwaji within the Alternative Penal Code despite his old age and suffering from chronic diseases, but after a year and a half, they released him within the law, under the directives of the Crown Prince.
Two years ago, the security authorities released dozens of political detainees, in separate batches.
