The President of the Security Council calls for an end to the violence and the release of detainees in Myanmar

The President of the United Nations Security Council, Norwegian Ambassador, Mona Juul, called on the authorities in Myanmar to immediately stop the violence and release all political detainees.
This came in a statement by the Norwegian ambassador, whose country holds the presidency of the Security Council for the current month, after a closed consultation session on the situation in Myanmar on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the coup.
“I want to stress that the military coup, which next week marks a year since it took place, has led to a wave of violence, killing and tremendous suffering for thousands of people,” Juul said.
“We call for an immediate end to the violence and the release of all political detainees, including ousted State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint,” she said.
“Let me be clear that it is the army command that bears the primary responsibility for the devastating situation in the country, and we urge them to immediately implement the 5-item ASEAN consensus plan,” she added.
“The Security Council held this session at the request of Britain, on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the coup that took place in this country in early February,” Yull said.
