British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ordered the Cabinet Office to investigate the claim of a Muslim lawmaker who said her faith was used as a justification for her removal from the ministry in 2020.
Nusrat Ghani said that an official in charge of government discipline said “her being a Muslim was raised as an issue”, according to the British Sunday Times.
The Conservative MP welcomed the investigation, saying all she wanted was for it to be taken seriously.
The ruling Conservative Party’s chief disciplinary officer, Mark Spencer, said the suits were completely invalid.
Spencer claimed that Representative Nusrat Ghani was referring to him with her words, which he said were considered defamation.
In response to the news of the investigation, the deputy said: “As I told the prime minister last night, all I want is for the matter to be taken seriously, and for the prime minister to investigate the truth.”
Nusrat Ghani said: “I welcome his decision to conduct the investigation now, and the referral materials for the investigation should include everything that was said in Downing Street by the government disciplinary officer.”
A British government spokesman said: “When these cases first appeared, the Prime Minister offered (the MP) to make a formal complaint to the Conservative campaign headquarters, but she did not respond to the offer.
The spokesman noted that the Prime Minister demanded officials to investigate the facts of what happened.
He added, “As he said at the time, the prime minister takes it very seriously.”
