Iran reveals the first steps of the railway link project with Iraq


Iranian media confirmed the start of the railway link project with Iraq by clearing the track through dispatching mine-clearing experts, at a financial cost of about 120 million US dollars.
The Ministry of Roads and Urban Reconstruction stated in a statement, “The country will start work and the tracks will be extended from the Iranian city of Shalamcheh to the Iraqi city of Basra,” stressing the importance of rail linking between Iran and Iraq for both countries, whether in terms of transit of goods or transporting passengers, especially during Arbaeen.”
It added that during the new agreement between the two countries, a date was set for the start of the construction of this railway, and a joint investment and operating company should be established within the next two months.
It continued, “The length of the line is 32 km, and the project will be implemented within two years to make exports to Iraq less costly and safer.”
