Security Council warns of mass starvation in Yemen, calls for immediate cessation of escalation
In a statement issued unanimously by its members, the UN Security Council called for a halt to the escalation in Yemen to confront the “increasing risk of widespread famine in the country.”
In their statement, the 15 council members stressed “the necessity of de-escalation by all parties, including the immediate cessation of escalation in Ma’rib province,” and called for an “immediate ceasefire in Yemen.”
The members of the Council also condemned “the recruitment and use of children, and sexual violence in conflict”, expressing further their “grave concern over the dire humanitarian situation, including protracted hunger, and the increasing risk of widespread famine, exacerbated by the dire economic situation.”
In their statement prepared by Britain, the council members called on the Yemeni government to facilitate the entry of fuel ships, on a regular basis and without delay, to the port of Hodeidah in the west of the country, stressing the “importance of all parties to ensure the free flow of fuel inside the country to deliver basic goods and humanitarian aid.”
