The Vatican urges countries to accept Afghan refugees and calls to provide for the assistance they need
Pope Francis urged countries to receive Afghan refugees who are looking for a new life, after the Taliban terrorist movement took control of Afghanistan.
The Pope prayed in front of a crowd of people in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, for the displaced people, hoping that they receive the help and protection they need, according to the Associated Press.
“In these troubled moments, when Afghans are looking for refuge, I pray for the most vulnerable among them, that many countries welcome them, and protect all those who are looking for a new life,” the Pope said.
“I hope that Afghan youth will receive an adequate education, which is essential for development and human development,” he added.
The Pope did not mention the Taliban or its policies during his speech.
He concluded his speech by expressing his hope that all Afghans, whether in their homeland or refugees, would be able to live in dignity, peace and brotherhood with their neighbours.
