Observers warn of humanitarian catastrophe threatening Afghan Shias if the government fails to protect them

At a time when the Shia Ulema Council in Afghanistan accused the government of failing to secure western Kabul inhabited by Shias, observers have warned of a catastrophe afflicting the country while the United States and the United Kingdom race to get out.
In a statement carried by the media, the council said: “The Afghan government is negligent towards its people from the oppressed and persecuted Shiite sect by extremist groups and the Taliban terrorist movement in particular.”
The statement added that “the majority of Shias in the country are constantly exposed to terrorist attacks, which requires the government to increase its security efforts to secure their areas.”
The observers said in press statements followed by Shia Waves, “The coming period could witness an escalation of violence in Afghanistan, and destabilization of the region, in addition to hunger and displacement, which are exacerbated by the spread of the Corona pandemic and climate change, especially with the withdrawal of foreign forces from the country and the control of terrorist movements over large areas.”
They pointed out that “the escalation of violence against members of the Shia sect will create new waves of refugees and undermine the search for equal rights and justice.”
