Guterres praises the Omani mediation in Yemen and stresses the need to end the crisis
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, said yesterday, Wednesday, that “no effort should be spared to end the devastating conflict in Yemen and pave the way for a just and lasting peace.”
This came during a press conference held by Stefan Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Dujarric stated that “no effort should be spared to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people, end the devastating conflict, and pave the way for a just and lasting peace.”
He added, “Martin Griffiths (the UN envoy to Yemen) is working to secure a nationwide ceasefire, reopening Sanaa airport, and the regular flow of fuel and other commodities to Yemen through the port of Hodeidah.”
He continued, “Griffiths is also working to move to a comprehensive political process to reach a comprehensive negotiated settlement to end the conflict.”
In the context, Guterres expressed his gratitude to the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, for his support of the primary mission of the UN envoy to Yemen, according to Dujarric. He said, “Oman has played over the years an important role in building bridges of peace in the region, including Yemen.”
On Tuesday, Griffiths left Muscat for the Saudi capital, Riyadh, after talks with Omani officials, as part of international efforts to stop the war in Yemen.
