UK Islamic group plans mosque and community hub at former pub site

A local Islamic association in Gravesend, UK, has submitted revised plans to convert the former Peacock Pub, closed since 2020, into a mosque and multi-use community center. The updated proposal includes a prayer space for over 60 worshippers, a religious school, food bank, and youth club.
The initial plan was rejected six months ago due to concerns about public disturbance and the loss of a social venue. In response, the new proposal adjusts operating hours and limits event types to address community concerns.
The association emphasized that Islamic tradition encourages walking to the mosque, aiming to reduce traffic and noise. With only two overcrowded mosques currently serving over 3,000 Muslims in Gravesend, the project seeks to meet growing community needs.
Proponents argue the conversion would revitalize the disused building and enhance local social infrastructure through inclusive services, fostering a sense of community and public engagement.
