Child labor concerns persist in DRC cobalt mining

Cobalt, essential for batteries in smartphones, EVs, and medical devices, is largely sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which supplies about 75% of global output.

While major firms like Glencore operate industrial mines in Kolwezi, thousands work in unregulated, often dangerous sites—many of them children, DW reported.

Human rights groups estimate tens of thousands of minors are involved. Activists have urged a boycott of cobalt from the DRC, raising questions about corporate responsibility.

While some companies claim to audit supply chains, concerns persist about the effectiveness of measures ensuring cobalt is sourced without child labor.
