Major Islamic project nears approval in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania

The Hershey Islamic Center in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, is close to receiving final approval to build a new mosque, Islamic school, and community center in Derry Township. The local planning commission has recommended the project’s approval, marking a significant step for one of the region’s largest Islamic initiatives.
The project will be built on a 9.5-acre site along Stoverdale Road and will cover 47,944 square feet. It includes a mosque accommodating 300 worshippers, a three-story elementary school for 210 students (kindergarten through fifth grade), and a large multipurpose community hall.
Derry Township’s Director of Community Development, Chuck Emerick, stated that the plan includes 97 parking spaces, meeting requirements for the school. Two access roads, including one for emergencies, are also planned. The project, under review since last year, is expected to serve growing religious and social needs while promoting community engagement and coexistence.
