Saudi authorities have expanded the use of flexible rubber asphalt on pedestrian walkways in Makkah by 33% ahead of Hajj 2025, Arab News Agency reported. The latest extension includes the route from Namirah Mosque to Al-Mashaer train station in Arafat, bringing the total area to 16,000 square meters.
The Roads General Authority (RGA) stated that regular sidewalks often cause strain on ankles and feet, especially for elderly pilgrims, who make up 53% of Hajj participants. Studies found that 38% of foot and ankle injuries during Hajj are due to walking on hard surfaces.
Hajj 2025 is expected to begin on June 4, with more than 755,000 international pilgrims arriving by May 21. Indonesian pilgrims are expected to form the largest delegation again this year.
