Iran expels thousands of Afghan migrants daily amid deportation crackdown

Iran is deporting between 2,000 and 3,000 Afghan migrants daily, according to a diplomatic source at Afghanistan’s embassy in Tehran, following the quiet expiration of a deadline for undocumented immigrants, Afghan news outlet Amu reported. Talks between Iranian officials and Taliban representatives are ongoing but have yet to produce results.
Many deportees pass through the Tanbako Camp in southern Tehran, where former detainees report harsh conditions and uncertainty. Both voluntary returnees and forcibly removed individuals are held there before repatriation.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, where needs remain severe. The agency has appealed for $216 million in aid for 2025 but has secured only 25% of the required funding so far.
