Spanish parliament urges arms embargo on Israel over Gaza conflict

Spain’s parliament passed a non-binding motion on Tuesday urging the government to impose an arms embargo on Israel in response to its military actions in Gaza, Anadolu Agency reported. The motion, introduced by the leftist Sumar alliance and backed by Podemos and the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), passed narrowly with 176 votes in favor and 171 against.

It calls for halting exports of any materials that could aid the Israeli military, including helmets, vests, and dual-use fuel. It also urges reforms to Spain’s foreign trade laws to prevent military agreements with countries accused of genocide or crimes against humanity, specifically citing Israel.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated that Spain has not purchased weapons from Israel since the Gaza conflict began on October 7, 2023, only acquiring protective gear for its forces. Meanwhile, civil society groups allege that Spain still holds nine active contracts with Israeli arms manufacturers.
