EU ends Syria sanctions to aid post-regime reconstruction

The European Union has agreed to lift economic sanctions on Syria to aid the country’s recovery following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime, The Guardian reported. EU foreign ministers made the decision on Tuesday, with chief diplomat Kaja Kallas stating the aim is to help Syrians rebuild an inclusive and peaceful nation.

The move follows the U.S. announcement by Donald Trump to lift all sanctions after meeting Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa. While the EU emphasized the decision was independent of U.S. policy, concerns remain over Syria’s stability.

Violence has recently escalated, with over 1,000 people killed in clashes. The EU previously eased sanctions in February but now seeks broader economic support. Germany stressed the importance of inclusive governance in Syria’s reconstruction efforts.
