India-Pakistan tensions deepen food security concerns in Pakistan

Rising military tensions between India and Pakistan are amplifying fears of food insecurity in Pakistan, already facing economic instability and a worsening water crisis, news reports said. Urban residents, particularly in Lahore, have begun stockpiling food, medicine, and essentials amid concerns of prolonged conflict and supply disruptions.

The price of wheat flour, a dietary staple, has surged by PKR 130 per 30-kg bag in two weeks. Other essentials like chicken, eggs, sugar, and pulses have also seen sharp increases. Experts warn that continued hostilities could severely impact Pakistan’s agriculture, which employs nearly 40% of the workforce.

Concerns intensified after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, contributing to a 21% drop in River Chenab flows—critical for crop irrigation. Declining water availability, inflation, and past flood damage have already cut wheat yields by 13%, forcing more imports.

Authorities have promised to maintain supplies and stabilize markets, but analysts warn that geopolitical tensions could further strain the fragile economy and exacerbate food shortages.
