Attacks on refugees surge in Berlin amid rising far-right violence, new report reveals

Berlin has recorded a sharp rise in attacks on asylum seekers and refugee shelters, reflecting broader concerns over escalating far-right violence and stricter migration policies in Germany, the Guardian reported. Official figures requested by Green Party lawmakers show 77 assaults on refugees and eight attacks on their residences in 2024—up from 32 assaults and no property attacks in 2023. Thirty-four individuals required hospital treatment, including women and children.

Green deputies called the trend alarming, urging stronger protection plans, visible policing at vulnerable sites, and decisive action against right-wing extremism. Berlin currently hosts about 45,000 refugees, many living in criticized conditions at former airports and temporary shelters.

Nationally, far-right crimes surged by over 17% in 2024, with nearly 34,000 offences reported, including more than 1,100 violent attacks. In one recent incident, extremists assaulted a security guard at a refugee shelter in Stahnsdorf.
Meanwhile, new refugee arrivals in Berlin dropped over 35% in early 2025, mirroring an EU-wide decline.

As the anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland gains political ground, incoming chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged tighter border controls, though recent coalition agreements have softened some proposed measures. Lawmakers and advocacy groups warn of growing hostility toward refugees, urging urgent government action.
