The annual international conference “Memory of Pain in Iraq” kicked off Wednesday in Holy Karbala, under the theme “For a Future Free of Pain.” Organized by the Iraqi Center for Documenting Extremism Crimes, affiliated with the Al-Abbas Holy Shrine, the event is held in cooperation with UNESCO’s Chair for Genocide Prevention Studies, the Martyrs and Political Prisoners Foundations, the National Commission for Accountability and Justice, and the University of Baghdad.

The conference aims to shed light on a century of atrocities and human rights violations in Iraq. The opening included a photo exhibition featuring over 250 images and personal belongings of torture victims and political prisoners, as well as equipment used by the former Ba’ath regime.
Files documenting genocide, mass graves, sectarian repression, and terrorism were also displayed. The conference continues with research sessions led by scholars, activists, and human rights experts from Iraq and abroad.
