Racist riots deepen mental health crisis among UK asylum seekers, report finds

The mental health of asylum seekers in the UK has significantly deteriorated following the 2024 Southport riots, according to a new report by the Mental Health Foundation, The Guardian reported. The report highlights an increase in anxiety, isolation, and trauma, with social media playing a key role in spreading disinformation and hate. Platforms like X were identified as hotspots for racist rhetoric, with asylum seekers reporting exposure to hate within minutes of logging on.

The foundation also renewed calls to allow asylum seekers to work if their claims are not processed within six months. Based on research from the Institute of Economic and Social Research, this could boost the economy by £1bn, save £4.4bn in public spending, and reduce dependence on taxpayer support.

Currently, asylum seekers can only apply for jobs in shortage occupations after a year. Critics argue this leads to poverty, poor mental health, and social exclusion. The Home Office reaffirmed its stance against unauthorized employment, stating it has no plans to fast-track work rights for asylum seekers.
