A Swedish court has convicted a police officer of assault and verbal abuse against a Muslim man during a routine inspection, ordering him to pay a fine and 15,000 SEK in compensation.
The incident occurred in Vänersborg, western Sweden, when police stopped a car over unpaid taxes. A dispute ensued, during which the officer allegedly made racist remarks, telling the 42-year-old driver, “You damn Muslim, we decide here.”
While being taken to the station, the man was forcefully pushed, hitting his head against a wall. Although the officer’s body camera was off, security footage inside the station captured the assault, supporting the victim’s claims.
The officer denied wrongdoing, arguing he was controlling the situation, but the court ruled the force used was unjustified. The case has heightened concerns over racism and excessive force in law enforcement, prompting calls for stricter oversight to ensure police accountability.
