Germany sees rise in deportations, drop in asylum claims

Germany’s acting Interior Minister Nancy Faeser highlighted progress in migration management under the outgoing government, citing a 55% increase in deportations and a 50% drop in asylum claims over two years. She also noted a 77% rise in skilled worker immigration.

Faeser, a Social Democrat, remains in office as her party negotiates a potential coalition with election winner Friedrich Merz’s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU). The parties remain divided on migration, with the CDU advocating stricter border controls and the SPD prioritizing integration and skilled labor recruitment.

Merz, likely the next chancellor, has ruled out working with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has gained support in recent polls. Talks for a coalition continue, with immigration a key sticking point. Faeser emphasized the need for a balanced debate, acknowledging public concerns while maintaining that migration policy should be handled responsibly and in line with European Union regulations.
