Trump administration moves to finalize USAID shutdow

The Trump administration is set to terminate nearly all remaining 900 employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), marking the final phase of its closure, US news outlets reported. According to senior officials, the layoffs, part of a broader restructuring effort, will take effect on either July 1 or September 2.

In an internal email, Jeremy Lewin, overseeing USAID’s operations, outlined two options for affected employees: remaining on active duty to assist with the transition or opting for voluntary administrative leave. Staff stationed overseas will be provided with fully compensated return travel.

This move follows the termination of approximately 5,200 contracts as the administration shifts USAID’s responsibilities to the State Department. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that U.S. foreign aid efforts are being realigned to prioritize national interests, asserting that USAID had deviated from its original mission. Further details on job transfers to the State Department are expected in the coming months.
