Indonesia gears up for annual mudik exodus

Indonesian authorities are preparing for the annual mudik exodus, as 146 million people—over half the population—travel home for Eid Al-Fitr. Officials expect the peak on Friday, with 12 million people hitting the road.

Around 33 million travelers will use private cars, 25 million will take buses, and 23 million will rely on trains, according to the transportation ministry. Over 164,000 security and transport personnel have been deployed across nearly 3,000 locations to manage the surge.

Mudik is notorious for severe traffic congestion, especially in Java, where the top destinations include Central Java, East Java, West Java, and Yogyakarta. Authorities are offering incentives like reduced toll fees and free transport to encourage early travel.

To enhance safety, military helicopters, ambulances, and aircraft are on standby. Last year, over 4,500 accidents resulted in 507 deaths. Heightened security measures will remain in place until April 8.
