Study links mango consumption to improved insulin sensitivity

A new study published in Nutrients suggests that eating fresh mangoes may help reduce insulin resistance, a key factor in preventing type 2 diabetes. Conducted by researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the study examined the effects of mango consumption on overweight and obese adults with low-grade chronic inflammation.

Over four weeks, 48 participants consumed either two cups of mango daily or a calorically comparable portion of Italian ice. The mango group showed a significant reduction in insulin resistance and improved pancreatic beta-cell function, while the control group saw no such benefits.

Despite mangoes’ natural sugar content, the study found no weight gain among mango eaters, challenging concerns about their impact on obesity. Experts highlight the importance of carbohydrate balance and suggest pairing mangoes with protein and healthy fats. Researchers emphasize the need for further studies, but findings reinforce that fruit, including mangoes, can be part of a healthy diabetes-friendly diet.
