Amnesty International calls on Turkey to restore healthcare access for Afghan asylum seeker

Amnesty International has urged Turkish authorities to reinstate healthcare access for Tabriz Saifi, a 29-year-old Afghan asylum seeker with diabetes and visual impairment, after his international protection application was rejected.

Saifi lost access to essential medical care on February 28 following a decision by the Bursa Provincial Migration Office. While his family has appealed the rejection—which, under Turkish law, should suspend its consequences—his healthcare access has yet to be restored.

Amnesty International criticized Turkey’s handling of the case, stating that denying Saifi medical care violates international obligations, including the right to healthcare. The organization is calling on officials to act before his condition worsens.

Saifi and his family fled Afghanistan nearly a decade ago after he reportedly endured torture while serving in the military. They initially settled in Yalova, where their asylum request was denied, before relocating to Bursa.
