Donald Trump to sign executive order declaring English as official U.S. language

American President Donald Trump is planning to sign an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States. The order also removes a federal mandate requiring government agencies and federally funded institutions to provide language assistance to non-English speakers, potentially affecting access to public services.

According to a White House document, agencies may still offer services in other languages, but the order aims to encourage non-English speakers to learn English. It argues that a national language fosters unity and civic engagement. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that while most Americans speak English at home, millions primarily speak other languages, including Spanish and Chinese.

More than 30 states have already passed laws making English their official language. Federal law also requires naturalization applicants to demonstrate English proficiency. According to analysts, Trump’s order aligns with previous Republican efforts to establish English as the national language, though such legislation has repeatedly failed in Congress.
