Iraq: Legal team formed to internationalize genocide against Shia Fayli Kurds

In a significant step to highlight the genocide against Shia Fayli Kurds, a specialized legal team has been formed to present the case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and international organizations.

Led by Judge Munir Haddad and Kamal Qaitoli, the team traveled to The Hague and Geneva to submit legal memoranda based on the 1948 Genocide Convention. Judge Haddad visited the ICJ on February 20, 2025, while Qaitoli presented documents to UN bodies in Geneva.

This move follows international legal precedents, including UN Security Council resolutions (661, 688, and 1483), which emphasize accountability for crimes committed under Iraq’s former regime. Haddad, who previously oversaw Saddam Hussein’s execution, is now seeking to elevate the Fayli Kurds’ case to the international judiciary to ensure global recognition of their suffering.
