Meta’s content policy changes raise concerns over mass violence risks: Amnesty International

A whistleblower complaint has been filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Meta, accusing the company of failing to address warnings about its role in fueling violence against the Rohingya in Myanmar. The complaint, supported by Amnesty International and other advocacy groups, alleges that Meta misled shareholders by downplaying the risks associated with its content policies.

The filing comes amid concerns over recent changes to Meta’s content moderation, which include rolling back automated safeguards and lifting restrictions on certain forms of speech. Critics warn these changes could increase the risk of violence, particularly in fragile regions.

Meta has faced scrutiny for its role in Myanmar’s 2017 crisis, where Facebook was used to spread anti-Rohingya hate speech. A UN investigation found that the platform contributed to inciting violence. Despite calls for accountability, including a request to fund education programs for Rohingya refugees, Meta has rejected such measures.

Advocates urge regulators, shareholders, and governments to hold Meta accountable, emphasizing the potential human rights consequences of its policies. The SEC is being called upon to investigate whether Meta violated securities laws by failing to disclose its risks to investors.
