Turmeric shows potential to ease muscle inflammation after exercise, study says
A new study from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) suggests that turmeric, and its active compound curcumin, may help reduce muscle inflammation and damage caused by intense physical exercise.
The research, led by pharmacist and nutritionist Daniel Vasile Popescu-Radu, found that consuming curcumin before or after exercise improves muscle recovery, reduces pain, and enhances antioxidant capacity.
The findings, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, are based on a review of existing scientific literature.
Although turmeric is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, this study highlights its specific benefits for athletes.
However, the researchers stress that more studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these results. “Curcumin could significantly improve the well-being of individuals who engage in regular physical training,” the researchers concluded, while emphasizing the need for further research into its absorption and bioavailability.
