Russia tests new male infertility drug

Moscow State University has begun clinical trials for “Mederig,” a new drug aimed at treating severe male infertility, particularly conditions like azoospermia (absence of sperm), the Russian News Agency “TASS” said.

Derived from human mesenchymal stromal cells, the drug offers hope for men previously without treatment options. Trials, approved by Russia’s Ministry of Health, will assess the drug’s effectiveness in phases one and two, involving participants aged 21 to 60.

Animal studies have shown promising results, with infertile male mice regaining fertility and producing healthy offspring.

The research is led by Moscow State University’s medical and regenerative medicine teams, with over 126 million rubles allocated for trials and production development under Russian government directives.

Scientists hope “Mederig” will address infertility cases unresponsive to current treatments, providing new possibilities for families seeking to conceive.
