Algeria launches “Sign Language Quran” project for the deaf and mute
Algeria’s Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Dr. Youcef Belmehdi, announced the launch of a groundbreaking project to create a “Sign Language Quran” for the deaf and mute community. This initiative follows the success of printing the Braille Quran for the visually impaired.
Speaking at a national seminar titled “Strengthening and Establishing National Religious Identity,” the minister confirmed the project has begun, saying, “We are working on producing the Sign Language Quran for our brothers and sisters who are deaf and mute. We have already started with the first chapters.”
The minister highlighted Algeria’s ongoing efforts to support people with special needs and noted that enrollment in Quranic schools and religious institutions now exceeds 1.2 million students, with numbers increasing during the summer holidays, reflecting strong engagement in religious education across the country.
