Rights group: Over 650 civilians killed and injured in direct attacks in Yemen in 2024

The National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVR) reported that over 650 civilians were killed or injured in direct attacks by warring parties in Yemen during 2024. The commission called on all parties to the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law principles, emphasizing that targeting civilians directly poses a severe threat to their lives.

In its annual report released on Sunday, January 5, the NCIAVR revealed that it documented 564 incidents of civilian targeting across various Yemeni provinces. These incidents resulted in the deaths of 214 civilians, including 27 children and six women, and injuries to 433 others, including 74 children and 52 women, with varying degrees of severity.

The commission highlighted that these attacks occurred amidst ongoing human rights violations in several provinces, noting that 2024 witnessed continued civilian casualties due to the lack of adherence to the unofficial truce and systematic violations, most notably indiscriminate shelling.

The NCIAVR urged all parties to the conflict to stop indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and other forms of harm to civilians, stressing that the persistent violations pose a grave threat to civilian lives in Yemen and emphasized that respecting human rights and protecting civilians must be a priority in any efforts toward peace.
