The Swedish government plans to propose a ban on cousin marriages to parliament in 2025, with the law expected to take effect in July 2025. According to Swedish Radio, the law aims to protect women and girls, particularly from immigrant backgrounds, from being pressured into marrying relatives.
The proposal, supported by the ruling government and the Sweden Democrats, has gained backing from the Green, Left, and Centre parties, securing approximately 75% of parliamentary votes.
Advocates argue the ban addresses honor-related violence and reduces the risk of genetic disorders in children born from such unions.
While the Social Democrats have yet to finalize their stance, opposition from the party would not affect the law’s passage due to overwhelming parliamentary support. A final vote is expected in spring 2025.
