Yemen’s Taiz sees sharp rise in cholera cases amid deteriorating health situation

Yemeni health authorities have reported 48 deaths and approximately 8,000 cholera cases in Taiz Governorate since the start of 2024, raising alarms over the worsening health crisis and the urgent need for international intervention.

Taysir Al-Sama’i, the media and education official at the Ministry of Health in Taiz, stated that “the cholera outbreak continues to spread across the governorate, with 48 fatalities and around 8,000 cases recorded since the beginning of the year.”

Al-Sama’i highlighted the rapidly deteriorating health situation in the region, urging international organizations to intervene promptly to curb the epidemic’s spread and provide necessary care to the affected population.

A recent UN report, published on November 6, revealed a nationwide tally of 219,009 cholera cases in Yemen since the start of 2024, with Al-Hudaydah, Hajjah, Dhamar, and Taiz among the hardest-hit areas.

In July, Yemeni authorities announced a 70% reduction in international health funding, exacerbating the country’s healthcare crisis.

The outbreak comes amid a relative military calm following nearly a decade of conflict, yet the war’s aftermath continues to cripple Yemen’s infrastructure, particularly the health sector.

According to the United Nations, Yemen remains one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with the war causing the collapse of vital sectors and intensifying human suffering for millions.
