Amid worsening economic conditions, over 72,000 Afghans flee to Iran, Pakistan in one week

Afghanistan’s migration crisis continues to escalate, with over 72,000 citizens fleeing to Iran and Pakistan in a single week, according to a report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Sep. 3.

Between August 18-24, 2024, a total of 38,402 Afghans headed to Iran, while 34,222 sought refuge in Pakistan. The report highlights a 21% increase in migration compared to the previous week, driven by worsening economic and humanitarian conditions.

During the same period, 64,950 Afghans returned from these countries, with 38,904 coming back from Iran and 26,046 from Pakistan. Despite the returns, the number of Afghans leaving the country continues to surpass those returning, as many are compelled to seek better opportunities abroad.

Economic hardship is the primary driver of this exodus, with many Afghans citing poverty as the reason for their migration. Restrictions on education, particularly for girls, and religious persecution under Taliban rule have also contributed to the surge in departures.

Since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, Afghanistan has faced a severe economic downturn, leaving millions in need of humanitarian aid. The UN reports that over 23.7 million Afghans require assistance, with 15 million facing extreme food insecurity.
