Amnesty International condemns Nigeria’s planned mass trial of protesters, calls for immediate release

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the planned mass trial of hundreds of protesters arrested during the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests that took place from August 1 to 10, 2024 in Nigeria, media outlets said.

In a Monday statement, Isa Sanusi, the Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, criticized the Nigerian government’s actions, describing the trials as a clear effort to suppress dissent and silence critical voices.

The organization called for an immediate halt to what it termed as ongoing and “bizarre attempts” to strip citizens of their right to peaceful protest, calling on the Nigerian government to release all individuals detained during the protests, stressing that their right to peaceful assembly should be upheld, not criminalized.
