Former Afghan president urges Taliban to allow girls to pursue their education

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai urged the Taliban regime on Sunday to permit education for girls and women.

In a post on X marking the 105th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence, Karzai called on the nation’s citizens to unite for learning and progress.

The Taliban have faced ongoing criticism for their treatment of women. The UN has labeled the regime’s systematic exclusion and restrictive policies towards women as “gender apartheid.”

Human Rights Watch has accused the Taliban of committing crimes against humanity through their oppressive actions against women, leading to a severe crisis in women’s rights.

According to UNESCO, 1.4 million girls remain barred from education, and the salaries of female employees have been cut to discourage them from pursuing employment.
