Japan cancels multiple flights, trains in Tokyo due to Typhoon Ampil
Flights and trains in the Tokyo region were canceled on Friday, with warnings issued for strong winds, heavy rain, and the possibility of flooding and landslides as Typhoon Ampil passed near Japan, heading further north in the Pacific.
The typhoon was expected to approach Tokyo by Friday evening before moving northward, bringing stormy weather to the northern Kanto and Tohoku regions by early Saturday.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Ampil had sustained winds of 162 kph (101 mph) with stronger gusts and was traveling north at 15 kph (9.3 mph). It was not expected to make landfall and was predicted to weaken into a tropical storm by Sunday.
Dozens of flights in and out of Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports, as well as Kansai, Osaka, and Chubu airports, were canceled, affecting around 90,000 passengers, according to Japanese media. Some highways were also expected to be partially closed to traffic.
