Following days of unrest, UK authorities arrest more than 1,000 people over recent riots
British authorities have arrested over 1,000 people following days of riots involving violence, arson, looting, and racist attacks against Muslims and migrants, Reuters said on Tuesday, citing a national policing body.
The unrest, which began after the false blaming of an Islamist migrant for the July 29 killing of three young girls in Southport, spread across England and Northern Ireland.
However, the violence has decreased after intensified efforts to identify and arrest those involved, with many receiving swift and severe sentences.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council reported that 1,024 people have been arrested and 575 charged. The arrests include individuals as young as 11, with a 13-year-old girl pleading guilty to violent disorder.
