Saudi authorities execute political detainee from Eastern Province on terrorism-related charges

Saudi authorities executed last Thursday “Ta’zir” (a discretionary punishment) against political detainee Mohammed Al-Atiq from Qatif in the Eastern Province.

Al-Atiq was accused of shooting at a security vehicle, possessing weapons, harboring armed individuals, and affiliating to a terrorist group, according to a statement by the Ministry of Interior.

Local media reported that the Saudi authorities carried out the death sentence “Ta’zir” against Mohammed Al-Atiq after referring him to the specialized court, which issued a verdict confirming his guilt and sentencing him to death. A royal decree was issued to enforce the decision, and the execution was carried out accordingly.

With Al-Atiq’s execution, the number of executions in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of 2024 has risen to seven.

It is noteworthy that global human rights organizations, including the American Freedom House, have ranked Saudi Arabia as the worst country in the world in terms of political freedoms, in strong condemnation of the oppressive policies adopted by the ruling regime.
