UNICEF delivers over 12,000 nutrient-rich food boxes to Jigawa State, Nigeria

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) handed over 12,400 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) to the Jigawa State Government on Tuesday to support malnourished children.

According to a statement from UNICEF’s head of Advocacy and Media Relations, the RUTF is intended to treat 14,000 children suffering from wasting, a condition where a child is significantly underweight for their height.

Malnutrition is increasing in Nigeria, fueled by conflict, forced displacement, and growing food insecurity due to limited access and high costs.

Nigeria currently has the highest number of malnourished children in Africa and the second highest worldwide, with over nine million children affected.
